The Hay Paddock vineyard on Waiheke Island was established by Chris Canning in 2003 on a sheltered site close to the ocean in the Onetangi Valley. Chris had identified it as a terroir perfectly suited to growing Syrah and the 2006 vintage was quickly awarded the Trophy for the best Syrah/Shiraz at the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Competition. Subsequent vintages went on to win multiple Gold Medals in international competitions and 5-Star ratings from leading wine critics. The aim was always to blend and age reds in small to moderate quantities that would appeal to top restaurants and wine enthusiasts.
